A child abuser who spent years pretending to be severely disabled in a desperate attempt to escape justice has finally been jailed after his own CCTV cameras exposed the truth.
John Siddell, 41, convinced doctors, prison staff and court officials that he could barely move, speak or even hold his head upright while facing serious child sex abuse allegations. But behind the scenes, the reality was very different.
Footage secretly gathered by police showed Siddell walking unaided, socialising at pubs, attending football matches and posing for photographs while enjoying nights out with friends. In one clip, he was seen casually using his wheelchair as a trolley while moving furniture.
The elaborate deception, which lasted for almost four years, also involved his older brother James Siddell, 44, who repeatedly lied on his behalf and helped maintain the false image that John was incapable of standing trial.
CCTV and Social Media Finally Exposed the Truth.
Leicester Crown Court heard that Siddell claimed to be mute, incontinent and physically incapable of carrying out basic daily tasks. During psychiatric assessments he sat slumped in a wheelchair with his head hanging to one side while James spoke for him.
Medical experts and legal professionals were initially convinced by the performance. Two psychiatrists and a judge ruled him unfit to plead, meaning he avoided a normal criminal trial.
Instead, a trial of facts was held where a jury decided whether he had committed the offences. The court then considered alternatives to prison, including supervision orders and a possible discharge.
However, suspicions began to grow among prosecutors and detectives after inconsistencies started appearing in the brothers’ claims.
Police later uncovered CCTV footage from Siddell’s own home showing him walking normally, collecting post and moving independently around the property. Detectives also found photos and videos from nights out at his local working men’s club where he appeared relaxed, smiling and socialising with others.
He was even photographed attending Elvis tribute nights and watching Newcastle United matches despite previously claiming he was incapable of functioning independently.
Brother Helped Maintain the Elaborate Deception.
Prosecutors said James Siddell played a key role in helping his brother avoid justice for years.
The court heard he repeatedly told professionals that John had suffered a stroke, was unable to climb stairs and spent most of his time confined to a wheelchair. He also claimed his brother was unable to communicate verbally.
Those claims became particularly important because several of the sexual offences took place upstairs inside properties. James attempted to argue that John physically could not have carried out the abuse.
But CCTV evidence completely contradicted the story.
In one recording, John was seen sitting upright in his wheelchair and chatting normally with James moments before attending an assessment appointment. As soon as they arrived, his behaviour dramatically changed and he returned to acting severely impaired.
Judge Keith Raynor said the deception was deliberate and carefully planned by both brothers.
At one point, Siddell appeared so disabled while in police custody that officers believed he had to crawl upstairs. Minutes later, cameras captured him walking freely once he thought nobody was watching.
The judge described the entire operation as a calculated attempt to manipulate the justice system while wasting huge amounts of NHS and court resources.
Child Abuse Victims Forced to Wait Years for Justice.
John Siddell eventually admitted 15 counts of sexual abuse involving three children under the age of 13 between 2018 and 2021 while living in Leicestershire. One victim was just four years old.
He also admitted perverting the course of justice.
The court heard the lengthy delays caused enormous distress for the victims and their families, who were forced to endure years of uncertainty while the case dragged on.
One victim later asked his mother what sexual abuse meant before finally revealing what had happened.
Another described feeling “confused and lost” and said he now spends most of his life isolated in his bedroom. The court also heard he had struggled to form relationships following the abuse.
Family members said the prolonged court process only deepened the trauma experienced by everyone involved.
Judge Raynor said the brothers had “entirely corrupted and undermined the criminal justice process” through “deeply dishonest and scheming behaviour”.
Medical Staff Began Questioning His Claims.
The deception eventually began to unravel after Siddell spent time inside a rehabilitation unit at taxpayers’ expense.
Staff there became increasingly suspicious because of the contrast between his claimed condition and his actual behaviour.
One healthcare worker famously described him as “the most verbal non-verbal person I have ever seen”.
During just two weeks in hospital, Siddell sent and received more than 300 messages on his phone despite previously claiming to be incapable of communication.
Further CCTV from prison and court cells later showed him walking independently and interacting normally with custody staff even while continuing to insist he could not attend hearings.
Even after pleading guilty, Siddell tried one final attempt to delay proceedings by attempting to withdraw his admissions. That request was rejected.
Brothers Sentenced in Their Absence.
Both brothers refused to attend Leicester Crown Court for sentencing and remained in prison cells while the hearing took place.
Judge Raynor sentenced John Siddell to 15 years in prison with an additional two-year extended licence period. He was also handed a 20-year sexual harm prevention order after being officially declared dangerous.
James Siddell was jailed for two years and nine months after admitting perverting the course of justice.
Following sentencing, Crown Prosecution Service representative Nicola Potts said the focus should remain on the victims rather than the brothers’ deception.
She said the pair believed they could manipulate the system and avoid accountability but had ultimately been exposed.
Potts described John Siddell as a “cynical, dishonest predator” and condemned James for helping facilitate the lies that prolonged the case for years.
Despite the extraordinary attempts to avoid justice, both men have now been jailed and the victims have finally seen the case come to an end.
