Newcastle University has unveiled an ambitious new initiative designed to strengthen links between industry, investors and academic research as part of a major push to support innovation and economic growth across Newcastle and the wider North East.
The new programme, known as Newcastle Innovations, aims to make it easier for entrepreneurs, businesses and investors to access the university’s expertise, specialist facilities and commercial support services through what leaders describe as a single “front door” into the institution.
University bosses believe the move could help accelerate the development of new technologies, support start-up companies and encourage further investment into the North East economy at a time when businesses are continuing to navigate financial pressures and growing competition.
The launch forms part of Newcastle University’s wider strategy to strengthen partnerships with industry and position Newcastle as one of the UK’s leading centres for innovation, research and commercial growth.
Newcastle Innovations Designed To Simplify Business Support.
According to university leaders, one of the key aims behind Newcastle Innovations is to remove barriers that businesses often face when attempting to work with universities and research institutions.
Instead of navigating multiple departments and contacts, companies will now have a clearer pathway to specialist expertise, research facilities, funding opportunities and workforce development support.
The university says the initiative has been created directly in response to feedback from industry leaders who wanted collaboration opportunities to become more straightforward and accessible.
Estelle Blanks, director of Newcastle Innovations at Newcastle University, said the project is intended to provide businesses with a much simpler route into university expertise and partnerships.
She explained that organisations looking to develop products, access research capabilities or grow their workforce should now find it easier to connect with the university and explore opportunities for collaboration.
The initiative is expected to appeal to a wide range of organisations, including start-ups, small businesses, large corporations and international investors interested in innovation opportunities within Newcastle and the North East.
Newcastle University Already Supports Dozens Of Spin-Out Firms.
The university highlighted its growing track record in helping research projects evolve into successful commercial businesses.
Officials said Newcastle University currently has 42 active spin-out companies which have collectively attracted more than £90 million in investment over the last two years alone. Those firms are also reported to have created more than 370 jobs.
Spin-out companies are businesses formed around research or technology developed within universities. Many operate in sectors such as healthcare, science, engineering, data technology and sustainability.
University leaders believe Newcastle has the potential to become a major innovation hub capable of attracting both national and international investment into the region.
The North East has increasingly positioned itself as a centre for technology, life sciences and advanced manufacturing in recent years, with universities playing an increasingly important role in economic development.
Focus On North East Jobs And Economic Growth.
The launch of Newcastle Innovations comes during a period when many businesses across the UK are still dealing with the impact of inflation, rising operating costs and economic uncertainty.
Many firms have reduced spending in response to financial pressures linked to the wider cost of living crisis, making access to research support and innovation funding increasingly valuable.
University leaders say stronger collaboration between academia and business could help companies improve productivity, develop new products and create skilled jobs in Newcastle and surrounding areas.
Professor Jane Robinson, pro-vice-chancellor for business, partnerships and place at Newcastle University, said partnership working remains central to the university’s long-term ambitions.
She said Newcastle Innovations is designed to remove unnecessary obstacles and help organisations collaborate more effectively with the university locally, nationally and internationally.
Economic experts have repeatedly stressed that innovation-led growth will be crucial for regional economies such as the North East as businesses compete in rapidly changing global markets.
Global Brands Already Working With Newcastle University.
During the official launch event, Newcastle University highlighted a number of existing partnerships with businesses ranging from local SMEs to multinational corporations.
Among the major firms already working alongside the university are Procter & Gamble, Siemens and outdoor clothing brand Berghaus.
The university pointed to examples where its research expertise had directly supported commercial innovation projects, particularly in areas such as data science, advanced manufacturing and product design.
One notable collaboration involved outdoor clothing company Pentland Group, owner of the Berghaus brand.
Researchers at Newcastle University worked alongside the company to develop new legwear technology designed to better adapt to women’s bodies and improve comfort during outdoor activities such as hiking and walking.
The project involved biomechanical modelling and physiological analysis carried out using the university’s advanced sports and exercise research facilities. The technology developed through the collaboration is now reportedly being incorporated into Berghaus products.
Businesses Encouraged To Access Specialist Expertise.
Newcastle Innovations will also provide opportunities for businesses to access specialist research equipment and facilities that would otherwise be difficult or expensive to obtain independently.
The university hopes this approach will encourage more firms to invest in innovation projects and product development within the North East.
Support available through the initiative includes co-developing technologies, commissioning applied research, building workforce skills and exploring investment opportunities connected to university spin-out companies.
Programmes such as the National Innovation Centre for Data and the Arrow initiative were also highlighted during the launch event as examples of previous projects that have already helped businesses improve productivity and growth.
University leaders say they want Newcastle to become recognised nationally as a destination where business, research and investment work together to create long-term economic opportunities.
Newcastle Innovation Could Strengthen The Region’s Future Economy.
Business leaders across the North East have frequently argued that stronger collaboration between universities and industry is essential if the region is to compete with larger economic centres elsewhere in the UK.
Many believe Newcastle’s universities represent one of the region’s greatest untapped strengths, particularly in sectors linked to science, digital technology and advanced manufacturing.
The launch of Newcastle Innovations is being viewed by some as another important step towards attracting greater levels of investment, retaining skilled graduates and creating more high-quality jobs across Newcastle and the wider North East.
With businesses increasingly searching for new ways to innovate and grow in difficult economic conditions, university leaders hope the scheme will help transform ideas developed in Newcastle into successful companies capable of competing on a global stage.
